Monthly Weather Summaries
May 2009 - Several record highs in an overall warmer than normal May across Alaska
May brought mostly above normal temperatures throughout Alaska. Several daily high temperature records were broken at the start of the month with the mercury reaching 75°F. There were a few scattered exceptions, though, as Nome, Tanana, and Yakutat all reported mean monthly temperatures that were cooler than normal. Precipitation was relatively light during May, for the most part, as dry conditions prevailed in the southeast panhandle, southwest, and parts of the interior. Convective activity swung into full force as the number of lightning strikes statewide totaled more than 6500, occurring primarily in interior and southwest Alaska. The fire season has started as well with about 100,000 acres burned during the month, due to both human and lightning-caused fires. Winter was not over yet in the north, however, as Barrow reported more than 9 inches of snow.
